Question:

"Doctor Who": Does The Doctor know what his real name is?

As far as I know, the audience has never been told The Doctor's name, and apparently it's "hidden" ("Fires of Pompei").

So, any evidence that The Doctor knows his name?

Thanks!

  1. um i dont know how far along in the series you are... so if you're only just at the pompei then dont read on. if you've got to the liberary episode then read on

but that woman with the journal says a word to the doctor which makes him trust her. i just assumed that waaaay into the future he must have told her his name, and this was something nobody would ever know unless he told them, and to tell them he needed to trust them. so by her knowing his name he knew that in the future he would trust her.

idk how i came to that conclusion. i think i read somewhere that ninjas dont tell anyone thier name until they know they'll be dead shortly.

suppose also that bit on the beach when he's saying bye to rose, and it cuts him off at "rose tyler i" he might have been going to say "rose tyler my name is pete" or soething. he doesnt look like a pete but thats not my point. when the clone-doctor guy finishes his sentance to rose on the beach at the end of the last series you dont hear what he says but it seems to make rose trust that he is the doctor and he has all the same thoughts and that. maybe he told her his name? idk

i think about dr who too much

    essay over guys!

  2. It has been proposed that the Doctor's real name is actually a string of Mathematical and Greek symbols. Theta-Sigma would be a shortening of his full name, just as Romana is merely a shortening. It is also proposed that "Who" could be the phonetic pronuncination of the first part of his name, who would explain the question mark on the outfit for the 4th-7th Doctor. Of course the latter is far less likely.

In one of the episodes of the \"Keys to time\" series, a former school chum calls Tom Baker \"Theta Sigma.\" The Doctor sheepishly tries to silence him while looking back & forth at the camera & his chum. Classic Tom Baker style.

His real name is given in \"Unfinished Business\" series of online Doctor #9. It is:

    Chrístõdavõreendiamondhærtmallõupdracœ... de Lœngbærrow -

    - Chrístõ to his friends.

But he also has many other names.

  3. hi

the evidence that the Dr does know his name would come from the Library episode where River Song after meeting the Dr in a different time line had then whispered his name back to him in his ear to prove she knew him & presumably because he was married before the war & had kids then he must have known his name as i'm assuming that marriage is marriage no matter where you are in the universe and a name is normally needed for this sorta thing (hee hee)
