"Don't take it personally." What does it really mean?

I always hear peers say "Don't take it personally." What does it really mean? I can't seem quite to get the point.

  1. that it relates to your flaws but dont be offended and start thinking im a bad person,because then id also have flaws..


  2. It means not to take it personal.

  3. It means "don't get offended I was specifically talking about you."

  4. It kind of means dint think what I am saying is directed at you or that I am criticizing you it is just an observation. However most times when people say Dont take it personally... I hear...diont be offended by this but someone has to tell you...

  5. It means...brace yourself I am about to insult you but I don't want it on my conscience.

  6. In my job I could say that to a person about the status of the project they are working on. If I told them their project was all messed up I wouldn't want them to think I am speaking about his or her own abilities.

       about yourself or generally --This Life is so beautiful,you don´t need to suffer or over analyze...!

  9. My coach was always telling us not to take it personally when she yelled her head off during a basketball game. She just wanted us to win and didn't really mean to 'hurt our feelings' if she did during a game.

    If your wearing a really ugly shirt and your friend tells you that it looked like the one they buried his grandpa in when he died, don't take it personally and let it bruise your style forever.

    That's what I think it means.
