I've seen many an emblem on a gravestone, and I'm usually able to decode them. However, on a recent genealogy-based visit to a local cemetery, my husband and I found this:

It was on the backside of my great-great-great uncle's gravestone. Can anyone identify what it is? I found one website listing an organization called the Foresters of America, but I haven't found this particular logo/emblem on their website. Help?

  1. What was the date?  that would help....  Also location or perhaps just a region?  I assume it would be US, since you are considering Foresters of America - but that is a guess....  Britain?  North Eastern US?  North Western US?  Canada?

  2. is it possible that he was a member of a Moose lodge?

  3. Some of the badges shown on the site below have the "stag" on them with the initials IFO LBC - Independent Order of Foresters.  LBC stand for "Liberty, Benevolence and Concord", a motto of the society.

<quote>An amazingly adaptable group of orders which in North America evolved from the Ancient Order of Foresters which in turn evolved from the British Royal Order of Foresters.  Included in the family are the Canadian Order of Foresters, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Independent Order of Foresters, Foresters of America, Companions of the Forest (or of Foresters) and several lesser Forester orders. <unquote>

  4. That is the logo of a member of the Foresters of America fraternal organization. They have an excellent database of all of their members because they used to pay a death benefit on a fraternal life insurance policy. I'd contact them and see if they can give you more information about him and his life as a Forester.
