"Fishing for birds" is this a real thing??

I said something and a friend responded with " no your wrong, now your just fishing for birds" is that real and if not should it be?

i have caught a few chickens on a rod and reel by bouncing a hook in front of them and when they bite it you reel them in!!! that is the only birds i have caught -- now i have heard of folks catching sea birds while casting!!!

Um...that's called a metaphor.

"Fishing for birds" basically means trying to get something that's impossible, like you were fishing for facts that weren't there, or that you were trying to do something stupid.

It's just a metaphor, no one really fishes for birds...
