My feeling tells me it's actually Roman, but as hard as I tried, I could find no quote from literature, so here's just my own humble translation:

"Dispraised be those who know pain".

It reminds me of something we kids often got to hear in the 1970ies in Germany:

"Ein Indianer kennt keinen Schmerz."

("A [red] Indian knows no pain.")

The first translation iss correct. But think you mean a sentence from the Song "Feuer frei", which is "Geadelt wird wer Schmerzen kennt.".

And:



geadelt = to be ennobled

getadelt = being criticized

As to what that particular sentence is supposed to mean... Beats me. I have no idea. I've never heard it before, and I'm German. So if anyone could tell me where they heard it, in what kind of context... That would be interesting.

I think the phrase goes " geadelt wird wer Schmerzen kennt"., meaning someone who endured a lot of pain will be knighted (become a knight/royalty). I believe it is a phrase from the bible, meaning that there will be a reward for enduring a lot of pain/hardship.
