Question:

"Hello, is [your name] there?"?

I've always wondered how to respond to people on the phone when they ask if I'm there. I usually stumble over my words, but manage a semi-comprehensible answer, but I don't know what the appropriate response is. What does one say when a person asks you to speak to you?

  1. If people aks "Hello, is [your name] there"? and if you answer the phone simply say "It's Eliz here, who do you wish to talk to?".

  2. If you want to be polite I was taught "This is she"

If you want to be a smart a$$ "Yes" and then wait while they're confused (usually reserved if you know the caller)

If I know it's a sales person and I want them to leave me alone I pretend I'm not home "I'm sorry, she can't come to the phone right now.  Would you like to leave a message?"

  3. Say either:

    "yes, this is her."

"yes, this is elizabeth (your yahoo name is eliz haha)"

or maybe if it's a friend just say "yeah, i'm here."

OR even better, "yes, this is elizabeth speaking." or "yes, you are speaking to her."

  4. Usually I would say ''Talk to me!'' or I would say this is she how can I help you.

  5. yes ¿?

  6. I'm not really any etiquette whiz but I usually say, "This is Her" or "It's me" and the ever popular "Hey!! What's up?"

  7. I say, "Speaking."  That's worked out for me well.  I used to do the same thing you do.

  8. "Speaking".

Or you can tell them you'll get her, leave for a minute, have some delicious cake, then come back and have the conversation.

  9. This is her.

  10. "This is she"  "This is her" is incorrect and makes you sound ignorant.

  11. It depends, sometimes you can tell by the way they stumble over your name that they are just trying to sell you something, in which case I just say, She is not here right now.  If I am at work and that happens, I just say, "This is her, how may I help you?"  It is really not a big deal.

  12. I usually say, "Hold on, then pause for couple seconds, then answer Hi this is "my name"  Its kind of fun.  At work I answer main line and also I am parts department, so I answer with regular greeting, then they ask for parts department, so I put them on hold and after couple of seconds I answer "Hello this is parts department" most people don't notice it, some when realize it think its funny.

  13. "this is she" is the appropriate response.

  14. 1) Speaking, or, 2) This is she, or, 3) This is (your name)

  15. "This is [your name]."

This way is better than "speaking" and other alternatives, because it reinforces your position.  You immediately relate to the person by emphasizing that you understood who they are seeking and that yes, you indeed are this person.  It's a simple thing to do - repeat your name back to the person looking for you - and it does wonders for your image.

  16. Them- 'Hello, is Bob there?'

    You- 'This is Bob.'
