  1. You can check for places to stay on www.venere.com; there are often cheaper hotels available if you stay outside the tourist area.

One way to save money is to consider using the night trains. Rather than making short moves like Rome to Florence to Verona and then to Venice, travel longer distances. For instance, there's a night train that leaves Verona around 10:30 and arrives in Rome a little after 6 am. You can get a second class cuchette, sleep through the night and have a full day in Rome much cheaper than traveling during the day and taking a hotel for the night. Taking a seat instead of a bed is even cheaper, but not very comfortable and much harder to sleep. Rome to or from Venice also works as does Venice or Padova to Genova or Cinque Terre (Monterosso). You can plan train travel at:   http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html.

You can save money on food by buying fresh fruit at the local markets or eating pannini or pizza. It's generally cheaper to eat a big lunch and less at dinner.

    Good luck!
