I think 'would' has the meaning of 'want to' or 'wish to'.

Is there any difference between following phrases?

I would not miss this chance.

I don't want to miss this chance.

I don't wish to miss this chance.

  1. Actually, would not is also wouldn't miss this chance. Don't would be do not miss this chance or do not want to miss this chance. It's just another easy way of saying if you miss this chance you may never get it again.

  2. "Would not" is more definite.

    Consider this:

A bank robber is holding you hostage and says one of these three statements:

    "I would not kill you"

"I don't want to kill you"

"I don't wish to kill you"

Which one is more reassuring?  The phrase "would not" implies more unconditionality.  "Don't want to" means just that.  The person may not want to do something, but that doesn't mean they won't.  Same with "Don't wish to."

They are similar in denotation (dictionary definition), but the connotation (implied meaning) of would has a much more solid tone.

  3. They're all more or less the identical.
