Question:

"International Charter Licence" Is there any such thing?

I'm a boat builder to trade, I'm currently building a 63' Catamaran from a well proven class "A" Ocean design. I was thinking on using it for charter so I can do a bit of sailing and still have an income. But each licence seems to limit me to one country where I can pick up passengers. Is there not a way to get a licence that is as broad and international as the range of the boat?

  1. You will need a Master Mariners ticket for the style of craft and the number of passengers.

The ticket is not "given" it is earned with exams. I suggest you get in touch with the RYA who may be able to push you into the correct course for for a Yacht Charter Skipper. There are a number of people and schools who run day skipper courses. Check out the web.

Any thing large will require an MCA Master Mariners ticket and that will require a lot of experience.

  2. I think you are confusing vessel documentation with an operation license.  A vessel must be assigned a nationality, otherwise it would be stateless.  Each country has their own construction standards to meet before being documented.  How and where you operate the boat will require meeting crew licensing standards.   All nations, except for unstable countries, will honor documents and licenses from other countries.  You need to decide what exactly you want to do and research the laws of your home country.
