"Is hope a drug we need to go off of, or is it keeping us alive?"?

i was recently looking through episodes of s*x and the City, and this topic caught my eye. is it bad to, against all odds, keep hope alive? when everyone you know and love is telling you to walk away and that things will never be the way we want them, is it bad for us to keep hoping for the best? i know they say "hope for the best, and expect the worst", but in the same sense, your contradicting yourself by saying that, because if you truely believe that there is hope, you cant wrap your mind around the idea that there could even BE a "worst", let alone seriously understand the devistation it may bring. i guess what im asking is if hope is just our own way of dealing with the pain, and procrastinating it, is it worse to just attempt to come to terms with how crappy things in life may be, or if its better to keep up hope, and prolong the pain untill its a certainty, and deal with the pain then?

input is welcome!!! :)

  1. I would say that 'Hope' is having a positive attitude that things in life will work out. We must realise that life is a school, we are here to learn, we are here to keep an open mind and we are here to have hope that things work out for the best; whether it works out the way we want it to or not.

I don't believe in the quote "hope for the best and expect the worst". This is from experience: I believe that we need to be thankful for what we have currently. We need to be realistic that life will never be perfect. We also need to deal with what is going on right now, in our lives, even dealing with the most painful issue that is going on whatever it may be.

Its' like we need to have a balanced view of hoping for the best: not deceiving ourselves by saying everythings going to be perfect when i have that holiday, or when i become a professor, or when i meet my perfect soul mate etc etc. But its believing that there are good things in life, its not all that bad. Its' facing your life as it is now but also hoping and believeing that good things do come around to everyone. I guess life is 1/2 good and 1/2 bad, but we need to have hope that things will turn out ok, they won't be perfect but ok. I also believe that we need to have hope in God, this is in whom i put my trust and hope. I hope this helps.

  2. The top psychologist in the country found that having no hope is depression. He created learned helplessness in the lab with people and animals. Then he learned how to cure it. Read about it on this site under the psychological cure for depression.

If the police catch you with hope, they will arrest you for drug possession?
