"Is your meal ok for you?"?

Question

Why is it, when u are sitting at a table eating your food, the waiter/ress comes along to ask the above question, when u can garunteee most of your mouths are full. Do they not want you to be honest?

i was a waitress for a long time. if you ask if its alright, then you are bothering people. if you don't ask then you are ignoring them. I always checked to see if things were alright and tried to see if they needed anything else....ie ketchup, mustard, extra napkins.be glad that they didn't just drop your food off and never came back.

That's so annoying. What are you gonna say? " No, the food is gross and I want something better" They get on my nerves, why can't they let you eat in peace?

Is either you are giving them the impression the food is not ok and it shows on your face or they find you cute and pretend in this context to chat up with you!

Mostly, they are friendly and wanting to know if their food is up to standard especially when they are new in business.

I find this a good practice but not when your mouth is full. Best ask after the meal. When the customer is having dessert or drinks.

It was *required* at a former job that after dropping the plates off and asking if there's anything else I could get (condiments, napkins, refills, etc...), that I had to go back 30 seconds later and ask if everything was OK.  Many people looked at me with disgust, they'd either had one bite, or were still talking and hadn't even tried it yet!



I hated that boss.

I'm a waitress and when I'm doing a check back on food and i have 10 other tables to look after its hard to find the right moment to check your guests food is ok when most of the time they have something in there mouth i don't do it on deliberately and i always say sorry if i do catch people with a mouth full

A lot of people ask for extras during there meal, like gravy or other sauce or another sideorder and complain when somebody doesnt check do they need anything else. eg. After meal ` was everything ok?` ,  ` Well to be honest I would have liked a drtink of water but nobody was about to ask`. So u are probably one of the very few people who have manners and are satisfied in your own knowledge that if u wanted something u would let someone know. (have u guessed I am a waitress) Cute one though x o x o

Asking if your meal is OK, whilst you're eating, has become a throwaway, meaningless gesture......like adding 'Have a nice day.'

They may well br told to do do by management who always know best as they have done the job themselves.

I can understand that to happen once, and it must be well timed, but I went to an Indian restaurant with friends two weeks ago and they were continually asking if we were finished, were we okay, this must have happened at least twenty times......do you think they were trying to get rid of us, it was a Wednesday and out of the thirty tables there were only three taken up, I could understand it when they 're busy.  Destroys the evening and interrupts your privacy. They should stop it if we had something to complain about we would soon tell them.

a sensitive question. I am sure, like you say -- not all servers -- are sincere when they ask the question. It happens --at times, that i do answer "so and so, it could have been better" -- then I get the funny look and no action. You are right -- in questioning their intentions -- in my humble judgment they want you to say "yes, it is O.K. whether or not the meal was indeed OK. Last but not least, i have a strong feeling it is restaurant policy to ask the question. hope you agree.

sometimes they don't want to ask anyone but its part of their job and required to do so. they are to do this as an act of kindness and to ensure that you are satisfied with their food and want to come back for more. so if you don't like something you can tell them but with extreme care of thieir feelings. don't want to offend anyone, or you can leave a comment card stating how it really was and give suggestions to make something you love instead. :)

Yes!! They wait for that moment because , if the food was bad, you would most probably just shake your head, and they can scatter away. They are lazy, and don't care about the food you are eating, and they dont want to make another trip to the kitchen to replace your food. . . So next time this happens to you, grab the waitress by the arm, slowly finish chewing, and then give them a 10 minute long speech on how the food REALLY was. When you are finished, demand that they bring you a new meal, because yours got cold while the waiter bothered you . . . It works like a charm

Ive worked as a waitress and its something you have to do management again,its to cover their asses if you were to complain later that something wasn't right.

They have been condition and trained (waiters) to ask that question to customers. When they are seasoned enough (waiters) they forgot to REALLY ask for a REAL answer. Because the reason to ask that annoying question is to improve the dish. They can ask maybe after you're full.....

I always used to wait until after the meal and say something along the lines of "If you didn't enjoy the food/service tell me and I'll see if I can do something about it - if you were pleased tell the owner (coz he was a difficult moody fatherless person)
