"Justin Verlander's a pretty tough chore for anybody," says Detroit Tigers' manager Jim Leyland
Detroit Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland witnessed Justin Verlander hammer the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, October 11 at O. co Coliseum.
Leyland observed his starter Verlander showing his best skills in the field in a crucial game of American League Divisional series in which the Tigers won it with style and went into the next level of post-season.
"He had a look in his eye today, A complete-game look in his eye. Justin Verlander's a pretty tough chore for anybody,” manager Jim Leyland said after the game and explained to the media why he was selected MVP for 2011 Major League Baseball season. Verlander is considered among the very best pitchers in baseball.
Later slugger Prince Fielder also spoke of Verlander and praised his contribution for the Tigers as he outclassed the Athletics’ entire batting line-up giving no runs in total nine innings as he said, "I thought he might have thrown 300 pitches if he had to, He wasn't coming out of the game, no way."
Not only Justin Verlander pitched during the whole game and literally outclassed the Athletics. He tossed nine solid innings and received only four hits. Receiving no runs on his long spell, he struck-out eleven and maintained his 0.56 ERA with great force.
"I think it's one of those things, I expected to go nine innings, In this situation, in a Game 5, I wanted to go all the way," Verlander said after the game and told the media about one of the greatest performances of his career .
Catcher Alex Avila also appreciated Verlander and talked in detail for his input in their team’s win as he said, "This is where legends are made, Tonight, he basically put us on his back and said, `We're not going to lose."
Many experts also believed that Tigers now have a very good chance in the next post-season encounter for American League title. With Verlander’s talent and the confidence they are carrying after defeating the Athletics, Tigers are the primary contender for competing against one of the National League team for World Series title.
