  1. historically they've been viewed as a service industry since they are in the restaurant business and that is where that industry has been classified -

    but if you delve into the inner workings of how the "kitchen" operates (and this is true in any restaurant) it truly becomes a manufacturing operation - and McDonalds is to the food industry as Henry Ford was to the auto industry

    its an assembly line -


  2. It could be viewed as both. It could be a manufacturer because they take a bunch of materials (ingredients) and assemble them into a finished product (a hamburger). They could also be a service because they are providing a good to the customer.
