Question:

"POWER STEERING" display indicator

2006 Chevrolet Malibu with electric power steering.

This message kept coming up on the radio information display all day -- "POWER STEERING". We took the car into the dealer and they claim that no such indicator comes up on their diagnostic computer. What gives here? I was of the opinion that the cars internal computer stored all fault codes untill the dealer took them out or rectified the problem. I know from researching these cars that the power steering system has had numerous problems and that there have been accidents as a result. Is the dealer trying to cover up a potentially dangerous/expensive problem in my car untill it goes 'out of warranty'?

  1. I would call G.M. and explain your situation! With electric steering, there is a control modlue that operates the motor along with some other sensers. If the light did come on as you have stated, there should be a stored code in the system. Also if you have a paper trail with this concern noted, and the car did go out of basic warranty, the field service rep. would have access to this. Usually they step up to the plate to correct the problem!

  2. If this car has electric steering, then a code should be set in ps module which would lead to diagnosing the problem.they are not looking at the right module to retrieve the dtc,s
