"Rafael Nadal is the favourite to win the French Open", says
Andre Agassi – Tennis News
Former world number one, Andre Agassi, took some time out to talk to the media representatives of sport 360 magazine. He is a legendary tennis icon and has enjoyed a lot of glory moments in his professional. He might have not attained
the same status as his compatriot, Pete Sampras, but he is the only man in the history of tennis to have achieved a career Golden Slam; won all four Majors and Olympic Gold in singles.
At the moment, only the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, is the active player who has all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold medal stacked in his title rack. Agassi talked about his Spanish successor and his chances of retaining
the French Open title.
He showed immense respect to the recently third ranked Spaniard and stated, “It’s going to be hard no matter what Djokovic has proven over the last year to ever think that Nadal wouldn’t be deserving of the favourite. He is the
Mount Everest on that surface three-out-of-five and I’ve got to believe that there’s a bit of an edge that would go to the person that has stood at the top of that mountain as many times as he has.”
However, the American legend accepted the fact that it is not going to a piece of cake for the Spanish number one because his arch rival from Serbia is also bidding to clinch his fourth straight Major title; something that hasn’t
been done ever since the miracle of Rod Laver. He stated, “Djokovic is in the position now to do what hasn’t been done since Laver. It’s early in the year but there’s no question his performance last year proves he’s capable of it.”
Keeping all other things constant, it is going to be an exciting event especially after the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer’s, majestic title triumph in Mutua Madrid Open, last week. He is back in the form and bidding to reclaim his
throne from the Serb. It will be a cracking triangular battle and not to forget the British number one, Andy Murray, who is thirsty to win his first Grand Slam title; end the drought and shut the critics.
Nadal is the hot favourite man at the moment for the American former world number one and he would like to see his reign continue in the French Open, this year. He accepts the fact that the competition is tough but Nadal is superior
to the competition in his eyes.
In my eyes, the Spaniard has all the abilities to oust his competitors and especially with the benefit of lengthy matches (best of five); the chances of an upset are massively reduced. There is a lot of pressure on the Spanish
number one especially after declining to the third rank and he will look to close down the gap by securing the points with the successful title defence in Paris, France.
