Question:

"Smart Casual" evenings??

We just got our Cruise Answer Book from Princess in the mail yesterday. It says exactly this:

Smart Casual Evenings:

Passengers dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home.

- Skirts/dresses, slacks, and sweaters for ladies

- Pants and open-neck shirts for men

In the dining room, items such as cutoff T-shirts, shorts and halter tops are not permitted. Shoes must be worn at all times.

Soooo... I'm confused. Can I wear nice skinny blue jeans like these (in Extreme Dark)? It doesn't say no jeans.

With a nice top like this (in Watercolor)?

And can I wear it with these sandals (in Aqua)?

  1. princess is one of the nicer cruise lines, and jeans would not be permitted,i have been on 5 cruises with carnival and they dont allow jeans or shorts in the dining rooms. formal nitght are formal attire dress, even gowns , men suits or tux, and for the more casual evenings capris and a nice top or a pretty sundress would be more appropriate, hope you have a great cruise

  2. No...jeans are not acceptable. The top is fine but nothing special and the sandals are too casual. That outfit is fine for daytime but not special enough for evening.

  3. Let me try to explain it this way, and this is based on my experience going on a lot of cruises.  On Princess cruise ships, as well as all of the other cruise lines, there are really nice main dining rooms where all of the passengers can have dinner every evening (and also on some ships breakfast and lunch).  These dining rooms are very well decorated with paintings or murals on the walls, curtains on the windows and around supporting columns, beautiful chandeliers and some have staircases for entrance and/or to get to the second and/or third level of the room which also have dinner tables.  All of the tables have Lenin tablecloths, not plastic or bare tables.  They serve the food on china and have for you a complete set of silverware for each course of the meal.  They serve grand meals, not hash or burgers and fries.

The idea is to provide the guest a place for dinner that is first class in every way and as good as any of the very best restaurants that you may go to back home for a special occasion and which may cost big bucks to dine in.  So with all of this elegance in the room they want the people to be dress appropriately in their best clothes.  This is not like eating in McDonalds, or even TGI Fridays, of Chile's, or your local restaurant on the corner.

Now, if you do not want to dress up for dinner you can always go to the buffet that will be open each day until about 10:00 or 11:00 PM.  Or you can just order rooms service and eat in your cabin.  In addition, the dress code for evenings is primarily for the main dining room, the show room and the disco.  So you can really dress "sports casual" for dinner and the show and then go change to jeans and hang out on the ship in other places like the pool deck or the game room.  You can put gym clothes on and go workout, or swim wear on and go get in the pools and/or hot tub.  On  any cruise there are always people walking around all evening after 6:00 PM in a variety of clothes because everyone does not eat at the same time.  There are two scheduled dinner seatings, @ 6:00 PM and again @ 8:30 PM.  Some people will change clothes after dinner to be more comfortable; I know we do on our cruises.  So you can take two outfits to wear sports casual to dinner; mix and match tops and bottoms, and then change to what you like most.

  4. no, that would not be considered "Smart Casual"

some types of jeans are not usually in the list but some will allow clean normal fit/cut jeans and a polo type shirt as the minimum, I would avoid the jeans if you can

    the shirt should be ok

the shoes should be fine as they do look nice, more like dressy sandals but you might want something fancier too

  5. Jeans are not acceptable on formal night. Even though you will see many kids in there, you want to follow the dress code because the staff can and will kick you out of the main dining room. For kids though they are usually a little less strict on the dress code, but I would say on casual night, khakis, black slacks, or a black skirt would be fine. On Formal night wear a nice dress. The top and the shoes are awesome, but I would just wear black slacks so you look more formal and you will get tons of compliments trust me. Its fun to dress up sometimes. Have fun.

  6. No jeans for evening wear just for the main dining room. You can wear jeans on all the rest of places on ship though.

  7. I've been on 8 princess cruises and have seen nice jeans in the dinning room, especially with a nice top, but no shorts or skorts. You will also see lots of sun dresses with sandals like in your picture. If you have slacks, that would be better then jeans. If you are going to the Caribbean or Mexico, jeans would be uncomfortable anyway. Too Hot! Most all shoes except flip flops  and tennis shoes are great to wear in the dinning room. You will find it kind of fun to dress up a little each day for dinner, because it's different then what you wear at home.
