  1. Well on myspace, I'd get ads about "meeting new singles in *insert city name*". Either your IP address or because you enter information on other sites about yourself and that can be saved. Maybe if you type the site as .ca down, it could work<jk. :)


  2. The network equipment that your ISP operates have location descriptors programmed into them, like city, state, country...

    When you browse to these sites, they read your IP address. They can instantly trace the IP address back to your ISP's equipment, which responds with the location descriptors, among other things.

    Anybody can do this. It seems "secretive" and "tricky" only because nobody knows much about it.

    Someone can only determine your location as close as your city, if that far. Your physical address is not technically "assigned" to your IP address. Your ISP can determine your location, however, only by looking up where your modem is physically connected to their internal network.
