Why does Stanley want to crush Blanche so badly? What does she represent to him?

  3. I think it's a power struggle, and a challenge.

    Stanley has a sense of power over Stella, but when Blanche comes to stay, she challenges his dominance. For example when Blanche calls Stanley an ape; this is something that Stella probably wouldn't have done.

    Blanche also represents a challenge to Stanley as she tries to convince Stella to leave Stanley. It seems like Stella is obedient and does what Stanley wants like the traditional wife role, whereas Blanche is more independent and free spirited.
