The coca plant is used in parts of the world to produce the narcotic cocaine. As part of the War on Drugs, the U.S. has promoted a strategy of eliminating the cultivation of coca. Why do Evo Morales and the cocalero movement believe that the coca plant should not be eliminated?

coca leaves form part of religious rituals in south america and are used as offerings to the gods  (eg: pacha mama, the god of the earth), they are chewed every day by some people and have been used since ancient times by the aztecs and incas so they form an important part of the culture especially in rural communities

also, growing coca makes more money for farmers than any other crop grown in that area

OK, let's get off to a good start...cocaine is not a narcotic, it is a drug, a painkiller, an upper, and it's just plain fun, but it's not a narcotic.

As paret of the war on drugs, the government spends lots and lots of  money to say they are doing things that they are not. They don't want to get rid of drugs, because they get too much money to fight drugs. Starting to see a pattern here? Anyway, I have no idea who these people you speak of are.(Morales, cocalero) Never heard of either. But the iindigenous people of peru and some other south american countries do still chew the coca leaves as a stimulant. It also helps with strenuous activities in the highter altitudes.

2. Someone not understandng the effects? Not hardly! EVERYBODY understands the effects of cocaine!

And it is one of the better pain killers available. Don't know if this helped, but Iike running off at the mouth anyway.
