I have to write a 'persuasive speech' about the inequality between indigenous australians and how it relates to the inequality between the black and white people in 'to kill a mockingbird'. any similarities between the two? any help would be much appreciated.

thanks. xx

  1. I think you could talk about how the characters [namely Tom] in 'TKAM' were considered as 'cheap labor', much like the Indigenous people were in Australia. Tom was lured in by Mayella to do a small job for a small pay; because he was almost desperate for supporting money for his family. The Indigenous peoples of Australia were also hired to do difficult work for low wages. They were definitely one of the the inferior races in Australia before The Turn.

You could also talk about how Tom was looked down on and blamed for the rape of Mayella. Bob was ashamed and embarrassed to find his [white] daughter pressing onto Tom, so he thought that he could only blame Tom to save his dignity [and his daughter's] as a white.

Not to be too specific, but this has happened many times with the rape of Indigenous Australians. Throughout history, European immigrants have been known to rape Indigenous Australians, and then have denied fault and blamed the Indigenous women for the assault.

Sorry if it makes no sense! Best of luck!

  2. There are several similarities.  In the American South, the blacks were still an oppressed race.  They were not that many generations removed from slavery, and there were still many who were not educated.  There was a great deal of superstition on the part of all the town people.  It was just a way of life.  Whites and blacks did not mix, except to have the blacks work for the whites.  They were not allowed to live in the same neighborhoods, eat at the same restaurants, ride the bus, use the public restroom, drink at a water fountain, and one and on.  This was a place where there was little tolerance for black people having success, or an educated mind.  They have lower expectations for their schools, they are still classified as second class citizens.

The Aboriginies of Australia have been classified as second class citizens, they are not educated as the whites are, and they are in much the same situation as the blacks here in America were during the past.

With one real difference, the blacks in America were brought here for slaves, and they were forced to abandon their former homes and traditions.  They were not allowed to speak their own languages, so as a result, they lost much of their historical information.  It would take many generations of work later, for the simplest thread to help the American blacks find out where they came from, and what their traditions had been.

Aboriginies, were in Australia before the whites came, they have an ancient language, and culture, and they have been forced to abandon their previous lifestyles because they were primarily nomadic and they, like our American Indians, have been pushed onto reservations.  They still have their cultures and their languages, and their race is relatively pure.  However, there are many who have moved off the reservations in to the cities, and have become more "civilized."

I hope this helps you.  This is a wonderful topic.  I love To Kill A Mockingbird, and Atticus Finch is my hero! Good luck with the speech.
