  1. The word true is important in the phrase. True Patriotism isn't just waving a flag in front of your house, or knowing the words to the National Anthem. True Patriotism is a feeling that you would do anything out of the pride you have in your heart for your country.

  2. oh yeah i had to do that when i was in school. i thought it was bullshit. they make you write about why your an american patriot. what if your not? i mean i think you should be able to choose your own topic. they cant make you write about something you dont believe can they?

  3. Well, I'm not going to write your essay for you, but I've always found that a good quote can go a long way.  Here are some quotes on patriotism:

"Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't.  You cannot shirk this and be a man.  To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may." - Mark Twain

"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it." - George Bernard Shaw

"Do not... regard the critics as questionable patriots.  What were Washington and Jefferson and Adams but profound critics of the colonial status quo?" - Adlai Stevenson

"Nationalism (patriotism) is an infantile disease.  It is the measles of mankind." - Albert Einstein

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." - Samuel Johnson

    And my personal favorite:

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." - Mark Twain

I hope that helps.  Good luck on your essay!
