"Why don't you come to Detroit?" read on?

Mike told me after the handshake, after the last game, he said to Hossa, you know, "Why don't you come to Detroit," and he said the response he got from Hossa was, he said, "I like Detroit! Detroit sounds good." said Scotty Bowman..

--Bowman goes on to say they pushed hard for Hossa at the deadline and werent willing to risk what PITT did to get him, but they upped the offer few times and PITT upped theirs (Montreal was also in the mix). In the end it weakened PITT for the future and DET wasnt willing to do that anymore in the new NHL. (see the Matthias for Bertuzzi trade)

--So did Babcock sell Marian Hossa during the handshake?

Does this put it to rest that Detroit was his first choice from the start?

--Did Hossa know he would be a WING since the trade? (Meaning he knew how much DET wanted him at the deadline but werent willing to mortgage the future for him. Did that show him how smart DET is as an organization and then to watch them thru the Finals from the opposing bench)

  1. ok...

    Is this a question?

  2. I think that Babcock may have suggested it and implanted the idea in Hossa's head. But the handshake line isn't a slow moving thing. It was probably a quick thought/suggestion. I think Hossa has always wanted to play on a true winning team and the Wings are that. I think the implanted suggestion may have stuck and he wanted to be a Wing all along.  Detroit was, is and most likely always be a smart organization. They were smart enough to see a shift in hockey talent as they went from the Russian five to the Swedish brigade. It looks to be another strong year for the Wings

  3. "how smart DET is as an organization"

Saw this coming a mile away.

Do you have a link to all this?

    Drop the puck already!

  4. the only thing that will put this to rest is when people stop talking about hossagate.  it's done, over, finite.  he saw detroit win the cup, he said to himself, 'self, i want to win a cup too', they made him an offer he couldn't refuse, he took the offer, end of story.  whether they 'had him from hello' or not is a pointless topic to debate about.  it's pretty obvious what was going on in his little brain at this point (hindsight is a b*tch).  you got 'em, enjoy 'em, now shad up about it.

  5. That is the greatest thing I've read all off-season and one of the greatest moves I've seen.
