I have a scrape on my leg that is considerably deep. I took the band-aid off and the cut had been oozing some yellowish stuff mixed with blood onto the band-aid. Do i need to treat this? What is this?

Please help!

Thank you so much!

  1. yellow ooze comes from bacterial infection.  The question now is whether you can self treat, or if you need to see the doctor.  I cannot assess your wound over the internet obviously, but you should clean it up with soap and water, irrigate with saline solution or hydrogen peroxide, and apply some antimicrobial ointment like neosporin.  If you are feeling feverish, have a red swollen area around the cut with or without streaking, if the wound feels hot, or seems like it is getting worse, then a visit to your doctor would be needed.  If you are not sure, then just go see your doc or even have the nurse take a look at it so that it can be cleaned and properly dressed.  A stitch in time saves nine.

    Take care hun.

  2. don't worry-- it's just pus: a type of discharge that is really bacteria. sorry if that grossed you out! really, your body is just using it's techniques to keep that wound clean. to advance the healing process, put some Neosporin on it every day (the wound, i mean).

  3. that yellow stuff is the dead white blood cells, the stuff in your blood that fights infections. you can clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide just pour it over the wound and it will begin to bubble up. afterwards wipe the wound clean (make sure to clean the wound thoroughly),  and examine the skin surrounding the wound if it is pink there is no infection but if it is dark red and tender there is some infection. not to worry though get some betadine (both of these are available at the drugstore or the first aid section in a grocery store) and apply it to the wound and cover with a clean dressing. replace the dressing often and clean the wound if needed.
