"You have 175 New Messages" - Counter doesn't recognize msgs already read.?

Question

I'm in a Yahoo! Group with seven other very opinionated people, and I rely on the "You have ___ New Messages" counter to keep me apprised of new messages.

I don't wish to delete any messages, but when I log into my Yahoo! Group, I'd like that New Message counter to roll down when I touch (read) a message.

Do I have control over the "aging" of messages, or is that a moderator function? Could not find any control panel function that applies to the counters.

Stuck New Messages counter is seen in Netscape 7.2 and in IE 6.0.
