"You play hard ... then get a new arm", says San Francisco Giants closing pitcher Brian Wilson
The San Francisco Giants' closing pitcher Brian Wilson is famous for his eccentric behaviour and somewhat for his thick black beard. Recently his comments "You play hard ... then get a new arm." regarding his own late muscle injury, created a big buzz among his fans especially in San Francisco media. Wilson was injured early in the 2011 training session that eventually forced him to rest for certain period in the regular season as well.
It is true that injuries do play a significant role in any athlete’s abilities to perform on a larger scale but this is also a fact that you should consider intelligently and make decisions categorically to overcome those injuries with a new spirit to perform well in future.
On the other hand, seeing Wilson’s past muscle injury, the Giants’ management has already took some drastic steps forward for avoiding any potential effect on next season’s results if Wilson again had to rest for several games. The Giants' general manager Brian Sabean is rather right when he spoke at Giants FanFest last week regarding their new signing of relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez in direct relation to Wilson.
He said, “Willie, at the end of the year, crashed and burned, we went conservative as far as his rehab. He wasn't going to throw until Jan. 1, and our bullpen was one of our strengths over the last three years. And, not knowing if Willie was going to be full strength at the beginning of the year, how could we weaken that bullpen? A lot of factors, we saw that Lopez and Affeldt pitched in a lot of high-leverage situations. We didn't want to break that up. We didn't think Dan Runzler was ready to take over for one of them.”
However, the next season is approaching fast and the Giants’ preparations are almost complete. Wilson and other pitchers are also ready to face their opponents despite speculations are still there as he will not be able to play all season long as he is in rehab carrying last season’s injury.
