  1. I see it as meaning something more philosophical... like, even though education is costly in the monetary sense, ignorance is costly in countless other ways.... such as, if you approach life with no real understanding of it, and are never prepared for it because of your lack of knowlege or understanding, you are doomed to failure. It applies to literally every part of your life... opportunities, relationships, even your own ability to perceive the world with any true awareness.... the impact of it is great because it can affect so many areas of your life. This, of course, makes it much more costly, in the longrun, than the price of a good education.

  2. The quote has meaning even beyond the crass monetary examples you might come up with (e.g. tuition costs money but a degree enables you to get a better job so that, over a lifetime, you are invariably better off ).

Any kind of education takes time and effort ( and often money ) but it enables one to avoid the pitfalls that ignorance allows and prevents you from taking advantage of the opportunities that ignorance precludes. Ignorance, therefore, is the most costly thing there is.

  3. Today 1/14 Americans is a millionaire. If some people would have increased their education level, maybe the fraction would be higher, more money would be available in the future compared to what was spent. Look at a doctor compared to me who works at Wal-mart as a sale clerk.

You also might look at it literally. Assume education was in the past. Ignorance due to no education is the present. In older times money was worth more, than now. Now you need more than one dollar to equal a dollar from 40 years ago. Therefore, today's dollar needs more effort to be earned therefore it is more expensive.

  4. do you go to linganore high?

  5. Getting an education, especially if you are thinking in terms of going to college, is very expensive. Not getting that education, however, can cost even more money in the long run. People without and education tend to make less money and have fewer opportunities then people who spend the money on education in the first place.

  6. There are some good interpretations up there, but I think this was originally used by the National Teachers Associaltion or some group like as part of their political lobbying effort--what they were driving at was the complaints of people that taxes were too high already, and they didn't want to pay more taxes for a failing public school system.

The essential meanings everyone mentions are certainly there, but it was basically an ad to squeeze more money out of homeowners.
