  1. the dissolving of the substances depends on their nature

    dissloving depends on denisities of both substances, reactivity of substance.


  2. This is due to polarity. Polar substances such as water and salt dissolve one another. Nonpolar substances such as oil and diethyl ether. Hence, the quote, "Like dissolves like."
