  1. That's because all the current needs to flow through the ammeter.

    The voltmeter has a very high resistance and there is almost no current flowing when you take voltage measurements.


  2. Ammeters are designed to measure large currents going through the meter - hence the massive terminals.

    A volt meter draws a very small amount of current to make its measurement so does not need large terminals.
