have him close his eyes for 5 min and do not touch.  after 5 min have him gently rub his closed eyelid slowly open eye, if he has a contact in there chances are it will slide back into the front of the eye after doing this.  if nothing happens leave it alone touching and rinsing will only irritate it more.  let him sleep and if it really is still in there his eye will feel dry and sticky in the morning...it wont harm him to sleep in it.  after this if he still thinks its in there take him to the eye doctor.
