Can someone explain this to me please.. I live in Texas but would like to move to another state for school, Florida. But, the out of state tuition is always dramatically higher than the normal tuition. If I was to move to that state wouldnt it then be considered IN state, right??

  1. not only do you have to live in the state while working, you also have to meet other requirements as well.  The rules are very strict and if you aren under 24 years old, darn near impossilbe to meet.  You have to prove you are self supporting, register to vote, have your car tagged and insured in the new state with your drivers licence in the new state.  Contact the school for the exact details.  It will take you a year or more to be considered a "legal" resident.

  2. You have to live there for a certian amount of time to become a resident. You have to check into their laws and see how long it is. Usually it's anywhere from 7 months to 3 years.

  3. Although the first answer submitted is mostly correct, it is incomplete.  In most states, the clock doesn't start ticking on residency while you're in college.  You must live in the state first...before you enroll, or enroll as a part time student while working.

Be advised that some universities, including the University of Louisiana at Lafayette http://www.louisiana.edu offer out-of-state tuition waivers to qualified students.  Such waivers allow students to pay in-state tuition even if they are residents of other states.

Also, be advised that only public colleges/universities charge out-of-state students more than residents.  Privates do not.

If you have particular universities in mind, contact them or visit their websites for specific information.  You can find links and phone numbers for nearly all U.S. four-year colleges at http://www.college-scholarships.com
