  1. You'll find it next to impossible to find that out without a squadron number at the very least, I'm afraid. As for the answers saying that other aircrew such a rear gunners were NCOs, that just not true. Yes, the majority were Sgts. or F/Sgts but you DID get commissioned officers in these other roles. Further, there's nothing there to say that he wasn't awarded the DFC in his later career having been commissioned and already served his time as a gunner. You weren't awarded the DFM/DFC simply for surviving crashes, after all! Some 20,000 DFCs were awarded in WWII and you won't find him by where he served, I'm afraid.
