"water filter from a bottle" question?

at school today we were shown how to make a water filter from a bottle with charcoal sand and moss as the filters layers . i wanted to make one but i have no charcoal so what can i use as a subsitute?

There is no practical substitute for charcoal so get some from the bar-b-que.
