  1. That is definitely a generalization, but practically speaking, I would say that the older runners have had more time and experience in building up endurance, so they do well in long distance. The younger people are stronger and faster, so they prosper in sprints.


  2. Older people have their whole body (especially muscular) system fully matured and capable of the endurance it requires in marathon, plus the experience.

    Younger are faster because the muscles react faster. They have more fast twitched muscle fibers.

  3. The reason for this is because sprinting is something that comes natural. Either you have it or you don't. Distance runners can be made. Obviously the more miles you put in, the better you will be at distance running. This is why older athletes excel, they have been running for years and the miles add up.

  4. If there older and doing sprints they have had a lot of practice in a longer amount of time where younger ones could have started that same year.
