I'm getting this screen:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.

select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I've already tried running chkdsk /p from recovery console, and no luck.

any other suggestions?

  1. Try using /R instead

The problem sound like one of the hive file is missing or damaged, which is serious.

To fix it may not be that simple, if you have access to another computer, you could take this hard drive to another computer and manually copy the file from one of the previous restore point ..

  2. Your question seems to be short & , simple, procedure to rectify things, is a bit large.Try it,

  3. chkdsk /p is diagnostic only. chkdsk /f will try and repair. But the error message is advising you to use repair console.

    Link is for recovery console
