1. Ultimately, MRI is better than CT for just about any kind of imaging you want to do. Its better for brain bleeds, fractures, soft tissue injury, muscle damage, sprained ligaments, acute stroke, chronic stroke, neurodegenerative disease, etc

CT is old....but many more hospitals have them and they are cheaper. Ct scan takes 40 seconds, MRI takes 5 mintues.

Your insurance was smart....you are getting the BETTER image of your brain.

A CT is a "look" whereas the MRI is "definitive."

  2. I'm not sure because an MRI is totally different to a CT. I always thought they had to do what the doctor had written you up for. If he ordered a CT, I think they have to do the CT. I would double check this with your doctor and your insurance because it doesn't sound right.

  3. If your doctor suggested you get a (CAT) scan, but your insurance wants proof, get a letter written out by your doctor.

Will a CAT scan find the same things as an MRI? Sort-of. A CAT is a full-body, and MRI focuses on the head. If you have headaches, chances are it's being caused by your head.

(MRIs go faster if you fall asleep and/or don't move. If you move even slightly, they need to redo photos and it takes longer. I know it's kind-of stupid to say "Fall asleep" in a loud screaming machine, but if you can you should. I do.)

  4. Well I'd say that first of all insurances are a pain in the butt.. I'd say the MRI would show something happening in your head... don't mean its going to say that you have headaches but it will show if theres a reason why you could be having headaches.. try not to worry about it much just do the MRI and see what happens.. How odd though that they would pay for an MRI but not a cat scan.. Insurance gotta love em... NOT!

    best of luck
