1. I always recommend learning on acoustic because, bad guitar players can hide their lack of skills behind distortion and such and never really improve. If you can play well on a cheap acoustic, you'll play great on anything better, simply because it is easier to play. The flip side is, if you don't like the sound of your guitar, you're probably not going to play it.

If you prefer an electric guitar, then go with that. I tend to feel that going from electric to acoustic is harder than the other way around, but... Also, beware of the sales pitches for all the "necessary" gear to sound good, i.e. big amps and triple-shielded, multi-guage, low-resistance, oxygen free copper cable, blah, blah, blah. Musicians aren't physicists, but they sure are suckers.

The biggest consideration with an acoustic-electric, is the added cost of the electronics. IMO, an A-E is good if you're going to be recording acoustic sound in the studio. Otherwise, you can mic any acoustic or get an attachable transducer pickup and voila.

Bottom line - buy what you want to play on and what sounds good to you. Go spend a day at the guitar store playing different gear.

    Good luck.

  2. I started out on a $99 acoustic guitar, made for retail stores, when I was 12...my parents bought it for me for Christmas/birthday because I'd been begging for one for a couple years. After a year of playing that, I bought a cheap starter pack electric guitar - Squire Fender stratocastor, which came with an amp etc. A year later, there was a really nice, normally $300 acoustic/electric guitar for only $129, which I researched and proceeded to buy for myself. A few months later I bought a newer, nicer and more expensive electric guitar, but my acoustic electric is still my favorite!!!

I would highly recommend an acoustic/electric for your first guitar. Make sure you focus on the acoustic aspect more so than the electric...you can always update you converter, but you'd need to buy a whole new guitar if it doesn't sound good acoustic. Play it only acoustic for a couple months...if you find that you love guitar, buy and amp and fool around with that. If the sound of the acoustic is high quality enough, you will only need to buy an electric guitar, and you won't need a new acoustic.

:) Enjoy!!! Guitar is a lot of fun.
