  1. yeah, I know, its weird ain&#039;t it? The word &quot;arteriosclerosis&quot; is older and was used to describe that the blood vessels &quot;hardened&quot;. The word &quot;atherosclerosis&quot; is now used to described the same thing, but understanding the mechanism involved: atheromatose (sorry, cant translate it) =intima degeneration with formation of plaques....which has the hardening of blood vessels as a result...

Arteriosclerosis refers to harding of the arteries, which could be due to fat or other deposits.  Atherosclerosis is specific for fat deposits on the walls of blood vessels.  I have a family member that has hemochromotosis in which the body stores too much iron.  He almost had a heart attack due to iron deposits in the arteries of his heart.  Once his iron levels were reduced to normal, those deposits disappeared.
