1. to be honest, dropping out of ballet wouldnt be the smartest thing to,

ballet is the basis to everythingg.

no contemporary dancer would do well without it!

yoga is good for strengthening, but thats it

in ballet you strengthen everything you would in yoga, you learn how to perform, and many ballet words and terms are used in contemporary noww.\

i dont like ballet that much either,

and im probably not gonna professinalize in it

but i know itll help me in jazz and lyrical and contemporary ALOT!

and my dance teacher has always told me to keep my weight forward in contemporary, and just let your feelings out :)

  2. hi,

yoga and ballet are completely different studies!

and yoga is different not only in what style you take but varies GREATLY between the teachers you happen to get too.

the possibilities that you could learn from a good yoga teacher would involve a deep understanding of your anatomy and balance (emotional and mental in addition to physical). the alignment of yoga poses can apply to dance but there's no aesthetic standard that you're working towards.

you have to decide what it is you want to learn!

  3. DO NOT DROP BALLET. Everything stems off of ballet.

Yoga or pilates would be great as side classes though.

They really strengthen your body, increase flexibility, and help you find your balance. :]

  4. ballet is the most important! yoga can help you...but today it's more used other thing as pilates or gyrotonic...also in the great companies use this matter...

  5. i think ballet is more challenging.................yoga is also helpful if taken up seriously

  6. While yoga is wonderful for stretching, strengthening, and having smooth fluid like movement it is not equivalent to ballet. Yoga can not give you the technique and basic movements for dance that ballet offers. While both yoga and ballet can help you with contemporary, replacing you ballet classes with yoga would not be a good idea. As many people mentioned and I'm sure you know, ballet is the basic for every dance form. In fact, at my studio they won't let you enroll in a contemporary class unless you are also in a ballet class. I recommend taking both ballet and yoga. You need the ballet, and yoga will give you even more help.
