I was born in a different country and my mom married a u.s. citizen (not my real father) so we were brought to the u.s. when I was 3. Then my mom applied for naturalization like 5 years ago and became a u.s. citizen but did not apply me to become one and I was not adopted by my step dad. I am now 20 years old so I was just wondering if I am already a citizen or do I have to apply for citizenship?

  1. You need to apply, the only way you are an automatic citizen is if you were born here. Talk to an immigration lawyer; consultations are usually free

  2. You have to apply for citizenship. The naturalization status of your parents is irrelevant unless they are citizens when you are born, and are born abroad; which then would be handled by the local embassy.

But since you were born in another nation to parents from another nation, you have no right to citizenship, but since you've likely been in the US for at least five years, you are qualified to apply.

  3. You would have to apply for citizenship. Its really easy, they ask basic questions. There are materials that can help you get prepared for it at the gov immigration site.
