What's the best cure for coldsores?

My husband gets them and whenever he feels the tingle of one coming on he puts Blistex on it and it does not eventuate.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. After the first attack recurrences may be triggered by the presence of other viral illnesses such as colds, UV light from the sun or reflected from snow may also trigger them. These may occur intermittently for life.

Application of a specific anti-viral cream/ointment such as acyclovir 5 times a day will hasten recovery, but it must be in applied in the early stages of the episode, ideally with the &#039; tingle &#039;, which is detectable even before the blisters appear. Within 72 hours of this tingle the Zovirax becomes ineffective and the best option is to dry the blisters. Dabbing on surgical spirit at regular intervals is perhaps the best way to do this.

Severe episodes sometimes require the use of oral antiviral drugs, there is also some anecdotal evidence that a course of these my lengthen the time between attacks.

Zovirax!  If you catch it in time it can prevent it from appearing - if its already there it will dry it out and get rid of it quicker - I swear by it.  I&#039;ve tried blisteze but thats rubbish compared to Zovirax!!

Coldsores need to dry out to heal - so first off leave it alone!!!  - i suffer every now and again and they always seem to heal quicker if I just leave well alone - if i put creams on them it just seems to keep it nice and moist and takes for ever to heal..

I know there is the old wives tale of putting pure perfume on them to dry them out.

If it&#039;s inside your mouth then rinse with warm salt water two or three times a day.  After every time you eat is best, if you can arrange it.
