Please help me on this one.

I have a camcorder.

I have a firewire cable.

My computer doesn't have a firewire port. (My old computer used to, but I don't have that anymore)

So I bought this thing that connects IEEE1394 to USB 2.0.

The computer says the USB is 'malfunctioning'.

What do I do? Should I just go to Best Buy and buy another wire that connects IEEE1394 to USB 2.0? I'm not good with opening up the computer to install firewire ports x_x

  1. you will need to get a firewire card installed. have a friend do it for you (tho it's not too hard).

usb is not good enough for real time importing of video.

firewire is far superior. make sure you have a 6 pin to 4 pin fw lead too.

    hope it helps!

  2. I'ver never heard of a chord that changes fire wire to usb 2.0.

USB 2.0 is actually faster than Fire wire, BUT fire wire is more stable. So it's better for capturing video.

It's really pretty easy to install a fire wire PCI card. It should give you a detailed list of instructions in the manule that it comes with. That's what I recommend doing. But if you want to try to use your chord for usb the first step to solving that problem would be to figure out if the usb ports are working with other devices and make sure they are in fact usb 2.0

  3. You'll need to get the FireWire card. USB was not meant for FireWire usage, that's why there are two different ports for each of them.

  4. I really can't say why your computer is giving you such message but I do suggest to get a Firewire card/port because the performance is faster than USB. Firewire cards are easy to install. Best Buy or other local computer store should install it for you and won't cost much.

  5. Don't bother with that Firewire-to-USB stuff. The only stable way to use Firewire is to go Firewire all the way through. That Firewire-to-USB stuff would be MUCH more common if it worked consistently, which it does not. There's a reason why you don't see that in stores everywhere.

Get the Firewire card; it'll save many headaches, and the video signal will be completely unchanged from the way it comes out of the camera.

Installing the Firewire card should not be all that complicated, especially with the way computers are made these days. If you find yourself unable to properly do it, I'm sure you can get somebody to help you out.

But overall, the decisive verdict is...get the Firewire card.
