1. To get my horse to gallop I relax my guard for a nanosecond and he's off! LOL. He loves to run.

Seriously, put your horse into a canter, then lighten your contact with his mouth a hair and squeeze with both legs. Do a squeeze and release with your legs as he picks up speed, trying to squeeze in the moment when he's in the air, so to speak.

Some horses have been so trained to maintain collection and a slow pace that they don't initially realize you mean to let them go. They'll probably prance and dither instead, and you have to be consistent with them until they understand they're allowed to gallop. Some horses, who may be a touch lazier, need stronger urging.

Other horses will take advantage of you and try to run off - be ready for this, and bring them back down by squeezing and releasing firmly with the bit. In an emergency, put both hands on one rain and pull his nose to your knee, even if it pulls the bit through his mouth, and kick his ribs on that side at the same time. He'll stop.

Wear a helmet, and have fun!

  2. It all depends on how the horse was trained. Anything can be a cue to canter or gallop. You could use the word.."Gallop" or "canter" or "carry one chap" it is what the horse has been trained to listen to...be it leg cues or verbals. or both..The horse will learn and do by what cues have been taught to him.

  3. What i do to make my horse gallop is to go up in my jumping position running my hands half way up the horses neck and give him lots of leg.It also helps if you encourage them by making a kissing noise like you would do for the canter.Whips are also very helpful.Big open spaces also help depending on the size of your horse.

    Good Luck

    I hope I Helped:)

  4. if you want your horse to gallop, all you really got to do is squeeze with your legs and let your horse go. tighten your legs around your horse and slightly move your hands forward. but wiggle your fingers back and forth to keep in control.

hope i help and good luck!

  5. It all depends on the horse and how it's trained, but with my mare I squeeze my legs and give her a bit more rein, and she goes. As for what age you should gallop and how many years all depends on how confident you are, how much balance, and if your ready to try. I have seen kids as young as 8 galloping in gymkhana events. I have taught a 5 year old on my mare how to ride and her favorite thing was to gallop. She did it all the time and loved it.

  6. Just go into a canter and then get into your 2-point and kick with your outside leg. If that horse is lazy use a crop on the butt.

  7. Are you kidding me? You've been riding since you were 6 and you still haven't galloped? I hope you're still 6.
