Are gerbils suppose to have a slit down the middle of their stomachs? I own 3 Gerbils, all of which have a 1 1/2 cm long 5mm wide in the centre of their stomachs. On one of the gerbils, the slit is quite clear and can see alot of skin. Is this normal?

  1. Yes.

  2. Yes it is there Scent Glands, if you have a white gerbil or dove as they are old the Scent Gland makes the coat or the Scent Gland turn yellow if there not give a sand bath every two to three weeks

  3. Normal. It's probably the scent gland your lookin' at. Or maybe, if your gerbil's a male, your probably looking at his, (man Bits)

  4. Yes. As Kacey said, it is called the scent gland. It's more noticeable on males than on females, as females usually have hair covering it. It's nothing to be worried about.

If you ever find a bump on the gland, though, you must have it checked out by a vet. It's a scent gland tumor and will need to be removed through surgery.

  5. yes this normal but only for males they are called the scent gland they rub that to mark their teritory but if they are not a male then i would consult a vet

  6. Perfectly normal.

It's called the "Scent Gland", and it produces a smell that gerbils can smell, but not people.

As they get older, you may see the fur around it turn yellowish. That is perfectly normal, too.

  7. yes all hamsters/ gerbils have this from when they were born mostly girls for nursing
