1. There are four phases of estrous cycle (NOT the same as the menstrual cycle). The second one is estrus and is the phase people mean when they say an animal is "in heat."

"Estrus refers to the phase when the female is sexually receptive ("in heat," or "on heat" in British English). Under regulation by gonadotropic hormones, ovarian follicles are maturing and estrogen secretions exert their biggest influence. The animal exhibits a sexually receptive behavior, a situation that may be signaled by visible physiologic changes. A signal trait of estrus is the lordosis reflex, in which the animal spontaneously elevates her hindquarters.

If there is no copulation in an induced ovulator, estrus may continue for many days, followed by 'interestrus,' and the estrus phase starts again until copulation and ovulation occur."

The phase "in heat" started near the year of 1900. It is not said why it's called this, but it might be due to the fact that the animals vulvae become reddened and may appear "hot." This is just a personal guess though...

Wikipedia has more about it if you're interested...

    Hope that helps!

  2. Because they mostly go into heat in spring and summer when it starts geting HOT.And look at yourself when you have your peroid (if your a girl) combind that with heat you are misriable!

You may have also heard of *In Season*.

  3. It just is, it doesn't matter why. I think it's something to do with the heat that comes off their gential areas at the time, and also their body temperature going up slightly- same thing happens to humans when they are the most fertile.

And it happens to all animals, and is called heat for all animals, not just rodents.

It's NOT because they go into heat in the summer!

Hamsters go into heat once every FOUR DAYS, despite the season!

So it's nothing to do with the weather.

  4. No idea, and i breed rats and hamsters

  5. thats a good question, im not sure, mabe because they feel hot around the opposite gender.
