1. Yoga does a couple of different things that can improve asthma problems. First of all, people who are generally stressed out a lot of the time have a disturbance in their circulatory systems in that there is less blood flow going to internal organs because there is more going to arms and legs (to fight and run "fight or flight".) The whole fight or flight thing wasn't really a problem in, like, cave people times. They pretty much needed it. They'd run away from a wild animal, roll a big heavy rock in front of their caves and this would relieve the stress and return them to baseline. We tend to ruminate over what we think the problem is and the stress never really goes away. ("Why doesn't my boss like me?" etc.) Through the path of yoga, the meditative aspects allow people to stop ruminating, start living in the present, and then their stress levels return to normal. So a nice, normal blood flow increases oxygen to all your internal organs including your lungs, making them healthier.

In addition, most people breathe in a shallow manner. This causes a lot of unhealthy things to happen. Anxiety levels rise as your breathing becomes more shallow and this can become a horrible spiral in which your thoughts race, breath becomes more shallow which makes thoughts race even more, breath becomes even more shallow, etc. etc.

But you can turn it around too; by slowing and deepening your breath, your thoughts will slow down which relaxes you even more, etc.

Lastly, some asana both open your chest and let you hang in a manner in which no pressure is holding your lungs down. If you stand with feet wide and parallel, for instance, slowly bending at the waist, bringing hands to floor or wrapping thumbs around big toes and pull chest gently open and down with head toward floor, you'll feel a complete ease with your breathing. (Just one example)
