Suppose you define the difference between under powering and clipping.

Such as:

under powering = low power.

Clipping = over powering.

How are they the same?

The problem is you don't define that clipping is caused by INCORRECT GAIN SETTINGS.

I can take a 100 watt amp to a 500 watts sub, with the gains set correctly and crank the volume and guess what, no damage.

Something you CANNOT deny:

I can drive speakers with a 100% clipped square wave signal all day long with no problems as long as the thermal and mechanical limits of the speaker are not exceeded.

I can feed a speaker 100% distortion all day long with no damage as long as the thermal and mechanical limits of the speaker are not exceeded.

I can exceed the thermal and/or mechanical limits of a speaker and watch it fail in short order.

These are electrical and physical truths and anything else is a myth.

  1. Well thanks to you guys I am learning the scientific facts about this stuff. I know I have my subs underpowered and it doesn’t seem like they have a problem with it. I have 2 Kicker 15 L7’s DVC 2 ohm wired series/parallel to a Kicker ZX1500.1 and it has served me well. Since I installed my second 250 amp alternator and second battery it seem like my amp has more than enough power to supply these subs. I used my first alt to power the car and my four channel amp and I used my second alt and battery to power my subs and a small 2 channel amp. The second alt has about 180 amp draw on it from the two amps and everything it working just fine. I know that under powering a sub cant damage it because then you wont be able to turn the volume down and I know that turning the volume down reduces the power going to the subs because when I turn the volume down the volt meters that I have going to my batteries returns back to maximum voltage and stays constant at that level and when the volume is up the volt meter will move down some and fluctuate during bass hits. I know this is not a scientific way of finding this out but it works.

  3. KaeZoo's link says it all from a company everyone is sure to believe.

    i have read a similiar artical from the guys at JL as well.

    If people won't believe us guys from Y!A maybe just maybe they will believe the guys at Rockford and JL.

    Then again..........they have already prooven that logic is not part of the equation.
