Question:

Park/All-Mountain/Freerid... Twin-Tip Ski Sizing?

I have been skiing for 12 years (since I was 4) and consider myself an advanced skier. I've almost always skied on short racing skies on mostly hard-packed and slushy snow. I very rarely ski in powder. I'm looking into getting a pair of skies with the bindings mounted in the center of the ski (rather than towards the back) and learning park. I was wondering if the sizing for these types of skies are different because there is less ski in front of the binding. I currently ski a pair of 153cm Fischer RC4's and I am 5'11" and 135lbs (male), so what size park/all-mountain/freeride twin-tip skies should I be looking for?

Any suggestions on a specific model/manufacturer would also be appreciated.

Thankx.

  1. a 160-163 anything in that size is different.. personally i still think you should get the bindings set slightly back. you have more control and if u ever wanted to ski flats it be much more fun. also rails arnt as fun as they look, jumps are much better, so if ur a fan of jumps get the bindings put back, it u like rails better go middle

  2. your 5'11 and you want to try park. Ok first thing is first. If you ski an average of 10+ days a season. Don't center mount. You will miss skiing the mountain. I sugest 2 cm back. If you really really really want to do park, I would say get the line anthems or the reno jib by moment skis.

In your title you say park/all-mountain/freeride, that eliminates those skis and center mountaing. If you want a ski for freeriding the all mountain and hitting the park some times. I would say something like the K2 PE (Public Enemey) i ski on this and love it. Another option that is a little more exspensive and hard to find is the armada AR6's. They are the best skis on the market for park and all mountain and it blends it so well togther. I tried them and loved them. You are 5'11'' so i would sugest a skis that is like 178 cm to 182 for more all mountain.

  3. I would say 171 to 176. What Morgan G said about center mounting a pair of Line Anthems is completely wrong.(No offense) The Anthems are very park specific and are really good at what they do. The ski is built for center mount so if you set it back, it will mess up with the swing weight, flex, and overall riding. A few pair of skis that would suite you would be; line chronics, volkl wall, or salomon dumonts. They all work amazing in the park and around the mountain.

  4. I'm not sure that center mounting is a good option for you. It sounds like you're coming for a bit of a racing background. Center mounting skis creates a lot of tail and sometimes that extra tail locks you into the turn a little too much, plus it changes the "sweet spot" of the ski. I would only center mount a ski that was designed to be center mounted, skis that are true twin tips (meaning they have the same tip and tail width). The Line Anthem is a good example of this.

So that being said, there's a lot of skis in the market that will let you free ride as well as ski the park. K2 has a number of them; the silencer, Kung Fungs, PE, the new Extreme, all would be really good options.

As for the size of ski that I would suggest, depending on what you want the ski to do best (park or free ride) I would go with something from a 171-179. There's a really good website that I've found that has tons on information on stuff like this, click on the link to check it out: http://www.geargenius.com/home.aspx

It's a bunch of guys that have worked in ski shops forever and they have a lot of really good info. You can even contact them directly to get personalized help. Check them out. You can also email me if you have any other questions.
