My husband wants to take up golf. He has played a few times, but is not at all experienced.

For Valentines day, I would like to purcase him a suitable set of second hand clubs, for a beginner. What type(s) are best to get and where from?

Is there anything else I should comsider buying to get him started?

I have a maximum of 70 pounds but would like to spend as little as possible. This may sound mean but we have a young family so money is tight, besides, I am worried the clubs may end up gathering dust under the stairs if the novelty wears off!

Also, we live in North Notts. Can anyone recommend any good courses he may play on as a guest and a beginner?

Thanks ever so much for any suggestions and advice. He is a great dad to our kids and I really want to get this right for him!

  1. Get him some lessons with a pro- whether in a group session or solo. That way he'll learn about the golf swing and will get some advice on which clubs might suit him.

My hubby and I play golf and it takes a lot of time out of our week. Are you sure that you want to promote the prospect of becoming a 'golf widow'? I only say this because if we both didn't play (and sometimes together), life would be lonely around here...and we don't have kids. Golf eats into 'family time' on weekends and holidays. However, if it is something that could be beneficial for work contacts, that might be worth considering too. But it takes at least half a day to play and then there's practise as well.

Sorry, I don't mean to put you off. I love golf, but I've seen my brother struggle with the family commitment thing and golf is the sort of game that if you don't play regularly (at least once or twice a week) then it's just frustrating.

    Good luck on your decision.

  2. Can you get him a gift certificate? Clubs are kind of a personal preferance kind of thing....

  3. holy moly you write alot :]

  4. It might be better to just buy some gift certificates from the local golf club that allows him to play a few rounds of golf that include renting the golf clubs. If he is just beginning and you are not sure if he will stick with it then you should hold off on buying some clubs.

  5. i would go for the lessons and rented clubs firstly it would get him off to really good start and the pro should recommend the clubs that would suit him....

  6. The clubs are only the beginning...he will have to pay anything from around £300 to £1000 to join a club. The clubs are no use without a course to play on (unless you expect him to play on a pitch and putt).
