1. practice, speed, and good techique

  2. It really depends on wwhat jumps and spins you are doing, but just tucking in your arms tight and putting enouph pressure on your toepick would do you good!

  3. Doing strength training is really important. One thing I do is attach a bungie cord to a tree and wrap it arround my ankle and then kick as fast as I can. This builds the muscles used for jumps and take offs.

For spins buy a spinner. They throw you off if you are not centered which is great.

All off ice practice, doing the jumps and spins in slow motion in front of a mirror or record the moves on a camera and watch every move to make sure you are holding yourself correctly.

Do your jumps off ice with 1 pound ankle weights. If you can jump it with this as soon as you are on the ice you get more height.

For balance stand in releve and close your eyes. See how long you can hold it. If you fall quickly, lower your releve and work your way to the full position.

  4. It depends on what jump and what spin it is. But I'll give you some genreal tips. On jumps, apply a lot of pressure on your toepicks, like for the Lutz and Flip. Other jumps require you to propel yourself into the air, so for that, throw yourself as high as you can, thinking you want to touch the ceiling with your head. A good excercise for this is really high Waltz jumps. Tuck in your arms quickly. They should be really, really close to your body. For spins, make your entry strong, and pull in your arms gradually. Make sure that you pull them in with alot of force, as if someone's trying to handcuff you and you're trying to pull your hands away, and he's pulling them to your back. Don't exit your spin when you're at your peak, meaning you're going really fast, or else you won't be able to exit properly, and you might get thrown away by the force, like someone flicked you off the ice. No kidding, this happened to me. I hit the wall, and a first time skater slipped, and the toepick of his rental skates went straight for my arm. Moral : ALWAYS wait for you to slow down before exiting. There, that's all I can give you in general. Good luck, and happy skating!
