Hi guys. My friend just got a new pomeranian pup yesterday. Its not the most social breed. Well anyway we got the people social part ok. But the dog part is a little harder. See, her vet says that the pup isn't completely vaccinated until 16 weeks. Ive heard that a dog who is not completely vaccinated should not have contact with other dogs or it could catch a disease. Ive also heard some where that its best to start socializing from 8-12 weeks. We have no idea what to do.... also che is sooo tiny so shes afraid that big dogs will hurt her.

Thanks for your answers =)

  1. About 16 weeks is good!

  2. Socialize it with people instead of diseasing other dogs, get her used to people touching her, playing with her, handling her and all that stuff.

Then when she's 16 weeks, get her used to dogs

Have fun with your pom! They are great dogs

  3. I agree and I have heard all of the same things you mentioned. I had a small bichon frise and I took him around my friends hugh yellow lab because I knew she was disease free. I also took him for walks but was careful with him around other dogs and did not let him eat things off the ground. At first I was scared because I thought the lab would eat him but she didn't. She did however growl at him and let him know where his place was and they have been best friends for 4yrs. I still worry if the lab sat on him she would crush him and I never know it. They are a funny site together but but I found out it doesn't really matter the size......just make sure you socialize them early.

  4. Actually, the Pom should be an extremely social breed and it is an important part of their personality. Socialization with other animals can occur as long as you limit the interactions with other properly vaccinated, healthy dogs. Don't take the pup to pet stores or parks, but you can take her to friends houses whom you trust and whose pets you know are well cared for and comfortable around other dogs.

Big dogs can be very gentle with little dogs, but I would strongly recommend supervising any interactions to ensure that she doesn't accidentally get tumbled or involved in rough housing that could be dangerous.

  5. Nowadays there are a lot of places with puppy socialization classes. Only puppies are allowed to attend, and they are strict about immunization records and vet records. SIRIUS puppy, is famous for their puppy socialization classes, but they are a bit on the expensive side. Your local SPCA, or nearby training schools should also have such classes. Make sure they are positive reinforcement classes.

You can also try nearby dog day care centers. We have one near us that has free puppy socials every weekend.

  6. When I got my pomeranian puppy my vet told me that dog socialization had 2 schools of thought. One that the socialization at an early age was very important and the second was that they should be be completely vaccinated before being taken out of the house.

My pup had already had 2 sets of shots when I got her.

He recommended to keep her away from places where a lot of dogs congregate like dog parks, ect. But to let her play with small friendly dogs who I knew had been vacinated. He said that it was a personal choice.

My choice was the socialization and puppy kindergarten and my pom is one of the most friendly dogs you have ever met. With people and dogs.
